A new study claims to show that men who take Viagra have a low likelihood of getting heart problems, but it’s not clear whether those people have other problems, including a heart condition.

The study, conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School, looked at men in their 20s, 50s, and 70s who took Viagra for erectile dysfunction. Viagra-sildenafil was the least common-acting erectile dysfunction drug and the least effective one among all the male impotence medications.
The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in December, but researchers say the drug may have serious side effects and that the side effects are not common.
“The findings suggest that the side effects of Viagra (sildenafil) do not appear to be harmful, and that men who take Viagra for erectile dysfunction may still have a low likelihood of getting heart attacks and strokes,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Steven Nissen, associate director of the Center for Sexual Medicine and Reproductive Health at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
“The current evidence that Viagra is associated with a low likelihood of getting heart problems is inconclusive, and does not suggest that Viagra is a bad drug,” said Nissen, who led the study and led the research that led to the new study.
